Here’s an inspiring story about one couple that turned their worthless front lawn into an amazing edible garden. A garden that not only beautifies the neighborhood, but also produces so much fresh organic produce, they’ve ended up giving away free healthy food to their neighbors….

They started by making 8 6’x4′ raised beds with 1″x10″x10′ reclaimed redwood barn siding…

They then filled the beds with free compost that the city gives away…

Seeds were sown directly into the beds and started sprouting quickly. Many were also started in a small hoop house that was made in the backyard, but almost all the plants were grown from seed…

Cinder blocks were used to fence the garden and were filled with compost too. They hold the wood chips off the sidewalk and create a honeybee sanctuary with lavender, rosemary, thyme, and basil planted in them…

The coolest part of this garden – They built a “free veggies” box to help spread the wealth. All sorts of people take what they offer up. People have been seen driving up and getting out of there car just to check what’s in the box. It is amazing how many free zucchinis neighbors will eat….
