“Last fall I got a phone call from one of my neighbors – “Would I like walnuts?” (I love my neighbors.)
It turns out that other neighbors, relatives of theirs, have two beautiful 89 year old Carpathian walnut trees in their front yard, both of which produced a bumper crop this past year. Those trees were sent directly from the Carpathian mountain area all those years ago, at a cost of $1 each, which was big money back then.
They came with an apology note about how expensive they were. (I heard this story from the folks who owned the trees as we picked nuts. The farm is still in the same family, and the trees were purchased by the grandfather of the current owner.)
We were blessed with many buckets of nuts, enough to share with family and friends. I had to learn how to process walnuts…”
