Tangerines, of the Latin name Citrus reticulate, are also known as Mandarin oranges. Clementines are the seedless variety of these irresistible fruits that offer immense health provisions for the entire body.
Apart from their specific refreshing scent and a wonderful taste, tangerines are bursting with potent antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B 12, and potassium. Tangerines also help our body absorb iron much more efficiently.
They are a precious ally in the battle against pathogens in this winter season since they promote the health of our immune system. Apart from the amazing hydrating ability, tangerines also nourish our skin and hair and contribute to maintaining our youth.
The good news is that we can actually grow them at home free of harmful pesticides by following these simple instructions.
The preparation and the sowing process
-You can either purchase the seeds, or use your own seeds that you have thoroughly washed previously. Obtain an average sized flowerpot with drainage holes.
-You should place some stones at the bottom, together with some sand that will promote better airflow. Then fill the pot with organic soil. We suggest that you use a mixture of components such as perlite, peat moss and compost.
-Then water the soil and allow it to drain so that it receives a sufficient amount of moisture. It must not become soaked.
– Plant few seeds gently without pressing them too hard into the soil and cover them with approximately half an inch of potting mixture.
– Put a clear plastic material over the pot, or place the pot inside a plastic bag to maintain warmth and moisture. This will speed up the germination process.
– The pot needs to be placed in a warm location since it needs a higher temperature at this stage, not the sunlight.
– Add some water occasionally, making sure that the soil is never dry, but do not allow it to become waterlogged. The first seedlings should emerge in about 20 days.
– When you notice the first saplings, uncover the pot and place it in a bright location without direct exposure to the sun. The temperature should be around 70 degrees F.
– You should fertilize the plant approximately three times a month during the spring and summer months. It is recommended that you use a fertilizer in a liquid form, which has a high content of iron, zinc, and magnesium.
How to care for a young plant
As the tangerine tree becomes taller and stronger and begins to develop true foliage, you should transfer it to a somewhat bigger container. Repeat this practice as the tree changes its size and height, taking care of the proper moisture level in the pot. You can also choose to plant it in your garden once the spring arrives, provided that you live in a warmer area.
You should regularly remove the damaged and shriveled branches.
The mature fruits should be picked gently.
And that is all. With a little effort and good will, you will be able to enjoy your own home-grown beautiful and delicious tangerines!
